Living History Weekend - The Election of 1872

Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site will be turning the clock back to 1872 on the weekend of September 9-11. The public is invited to the park for a free living history event: Grant or Greeley – Which? The Election of 1872. Costumed interpreters will give impassioned speeches and introduce visitors to the candidates and issues of the 1872 presidential election. Visitors will have the opportunity to talk to the candidates and their campaigners, participate in hands-on activities, watch an evening torch-light parade, see a historic photography demonstration, listen to a band playing music from the 1870s, create their own campaign ribbons, play historic children’s games, and more. Visitors will also be encouraged to cast their vote for the presidential candidate of their choice.

In 1872 President Ulysses S. Grant is running for re-election, but the Republican Party has split. A faction of the party has labeled themselves the Liberal Republicans and nominated the famous newspaperman, Horace Greeley, as their candidate. The Democrats have decided to endorse Greeley as well. The Equal Rights Party, however, has nominated the first woman to be President- Victoria Woodhull.

On Friday evening, from 6:30 – 9:00 pm,  the living history presenters will include Horace Greeley, Frederick Douglass, Victoria Woodhull, Frederick Dent (Grant’s brother-in-law) and several others. The program continues on Saturday from 10 am – 8:30 pm and on Sunday from 10 am – 4:30 pm. More details, including a schedule of events, are on the park’s website  www.nps.gov/ulsg For information, call the park at 314-842-1867 ext. 230.
